GOTD 4

Bird flight study
Today's belated GIF is a study of a dove in infuriating slow motion. I tried to focus on the 3D stuff in this one.from what I've learnt so far this is one of the more important aspects of making an animation look convincing. Ya boi Jakers has been reading up on his animation history and it turns out this has been a priority since the start. Check out this chap, Winsor McCay, one of the first full scale animators that graced this good earth. This crazy bastard got it figured out back in 1912, and on top of that, each frame is hand drawn. Looks like it's time to up my game then, eh fellers?

Leto's Joker: a brief character design analysis

This is probably going to be covered a lot, so I am going to use it as more of an exercise in character design theory than an article I expect anybody to give a damn about, so get ready for some poorly formatted ramblage.

My feelings towards this image are mixed. While I do think this is an undoubtedly beautiful piece of character design, there is a lot I have to complain about.

Obviously there are some major differences in his design, taking it in a more Marylin Manson, 90s NĂ¼-metal kid, "My Dad doesn't understand me" direction, but I feel that in the context of the suicide squad this is a good decision. It comes across a lot more punk, anti-hero than "rich white bastard with a nice taylor"

Now on to the tattoos. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely dig the idea of Joker with his impulsiveness walking into a tattoo parlor and inking himself head to toe. This isn't out of character and actually looks pretty sweet, but then you take a closer look. I know he is a narcissist, but they are some pretty masturbatory tattoos even for him. Not only masturbatory but weirdly self-aware and pop-cultural. They are the tattoos of a fan of batman gets; It's like if Bruce Wayne wore one of those batman logo shirts fat guys wear at comic book conventions.

Oh and whoever thought of him having the word "damaged" tattooed on his forehead can fuck off. There is absolutely nothing clever, or even appropriate to the character about this. We guessed he was damaged without this little visual clue, lads and the fact that he acknowledges himself as damaged to the degree where he will mark the fact on his face forever just feels so... not him. He was never one for reflecting or brooding, he just does shit he thinks is funny, poetic or will prove some unusual point. And again, he is a narcissistic sociopath, why would it even occur to him there was anything wrong with him, let alone feel the need to point it out to his mates. This is the man who cut his face off as part of his plan. clearly he doesn't give a shit about his physical or mental state.

The other stuff really works for me. The grill, the makeup, the hair, he looks like a guy who's done some shit, and done the time that comes with it. There is some really sinister, cannibal quality to his appearance, and what's more is he actually looks like some people I've met at gigs. He's legitimately horrifying to look at with his haunting and iconic state of uncontrollable, maniacal hysterics.

So all in all I'd say I'm pretty impressed if not for some quite prominent niggles. Hopefully Suicide Squad is as interesting as its looking to be.

GIF of the day 2

Late birthday present for my apprentice of legitimacy, Big Man Danny T.
This piece accurately depicts the fighting style and poorly drawn body everybody knows him so well for. It was very tricky to get a likeness on his face, and I feel that this result is nowhere near photorealistic enough. I couldn't quite capture the "big old douche" demeanor he carries across so prominently.

Today's GIF is a grunge giraffe sporting a bitching ass turtlrneck, if your simple mind can comprehend such artistry.

New GIF plus some more general rambling

This animation business is turning into a bit of an obsession of mine. It's definitely a lot more gratifying to see your character in motion. I feel it gives a much better sense of character and form. So here for your brains to absorb is my newest world changing masterpiece: a fat bloke in a grass skirt kicking nothing in an endless loop for no reason.

The colouring and shading were fairly new to me but I'd say the result is fairly decent regardless. I feel a few more of these and I will most likely be ready for making a proper animation with backgrounds and voice acting and a plot and what have you, but for the time being I am going to ward off that intimidating load of fuss with my "blade of +10 cowering behind something I know I'm moderately decent at".

I plan on making it a regular feature on this blog of uploading a GIF of some description each day. Obviously on busy days it will probably won't be "put it on the fridge so everybody can see it" standard but it will most likely be there. I am more than happy to take requests for this, too. Put your suggestions in the comments and all that fun stuff.

In other news, I have attained a booth at Leicester Geekfest 2015. The event isn't the most mind-blowingly huge convention of all time but it will almost certainly be a joyous romp nonetheless. I still haven't entirely planned out what my booth will entail but it will have my beautiful face behind a table of my beautiful artwork so what could possibly go wrong? If you don't show up I will cry.

Expect more tomorrow!

Ben affleck rant

There is a lot of talk about Batman being played by Ben Affleck in the upcoming Superman Vs Batman film. This appears to have caused a stir in many communities around the internet, with concerns of Affleck's acting being not up to scratch for such a role.

Now I'm sorry but since when was Batman such a subtle and nuanced character? He absolutely stands out from the other shouty bondage enthusiasts in the DC universe but not to the degree where only the art schooliest of method actors can accurately portray his majestic presence. My real complaint with this casting choice is that Ben Affleck isn't playing more roles within the movie.

Imagine the wondrous beauty of Kal-Affleck and Batfleck slugging it out in a melee of hammy acting and debatable facial hair. Imagine the actor who partook in the turning of a true american tragedy into one of the best unintentional comedies of all time as Commissioner Gordon stood on a frosty roof , mustache twitching waiting for Batfleck to respond to the Academy Award for Best Picture signal. Imagine his proud, manly chest protruding in the wake of defeating his greatest foe, himself.

It is true that I do have a personal vendetta against Superman as a character. I could rant on just that, mainly because he is a dull outdated power fantasy with too many powers and a generally crap design, but I feel that Ben Affleck can bring this dull 30's ideal into the 21's century with his edgy "stuttering sometimes to make the character seem real" acting style, and his "nice guy yet somehow still punchable" face.

Facetiousness aside I actually honestly don't see the problem with this casting choice. I mean it was never like batman was easy to take seriously anyway. He is kind of a chunk of man shoved in some latex with cute little ears and a cape. It even made Christian Bale look stupid. Batman for me always brings ideas to mind of him with a coat hanger trying to pry his gelatinous form into his costume in a display that can only resemble your mother stuffing the Christmas turkey with a live Diplodocus . He then heads to the streets harassing nearby clowns and bodybuilders bellowing "justice" from his protruding lips, all the while being trailed by his trusty sidekick, "boy who is way too young to be hanging out with middle-aged millionaires and I suspect is some horrendous form of prostitute"

Animations, bro

In some perfect storm of masochism, too much free time and some good old fashioned unbridled insanity I appear to have adopted a desire to make my artwork move. Thankfully we live in a technological age where, for better or for worse, such witchcraft can be achieved. That's right! Even by my sorry ass. So prepare all necessary orifices for what's to come. There will be much more than an assortment of crappy looped GIFs by the time I've actually figured out what the hell I'm doing. Stay tuned kids!

Time to reignite this mother

Some of my more avid readers (Hi, Mum) will have noticed that I have completely removed all of my previous posts. Is this to detach my adult self from my ever-so-embarrassing younger self? Potentially. But my true reason for starting over is symbolic. I feel a true passing of an era in myself. The ashes of being a teenage dumbass are still hot, but hopefully the glorious blazing pheonix of adulthood will raise from this and carry me to a magical world of new artistic possibilities. I also intend on posting a bit more than once every century so if your idea of a good night in is reading up on a northern drunkard on his quest for "dank art skillz m9" then welcome to paradise. Oh and here's some of my art for any people unfamiliar with me.
